International Sailing Series,Celebration of EXPO 2005

The famous race around the Isle of Wight in 1851, from which the oldest trophy of international sport the America’s Cup was originated, was one of the biggest marine events commemorating the first World Exposition in London. Since then, sailing and World Expo have had close ties with one another.

This year, the first World Expo of the 21st century will be held in Aichi, Japan.

To support EXPO 2005 from the ocean, Japan Sailing Federation (JSAF) will hold “International Sailing Series, Celebration of EXPO 2005” on Mikawa Bay, the home of first Japanese Challenger for the America’s Cup Nippon Challenge. “The Wisdom of Nature” is the main theme of EXPO 2005 AICHI, together with its sub themes of “Development for Eco-communities”. Sailing fits these themes for it being an environment-friendly sport that uses wind - renewable energy - as its primary energy source, causing relatively less harm to the environment. We hope that many visitors to EXPO 2005 will discover and explore the fun of sailing and the importance of natural environment through this event.

International Sailing Series is consisted of five International Championship Races for high-level competitions, two Open Races for amateur sailors, and three sailing experience events as listed below. During this period, nearly 10,000 people including 1,500 sailors from 49 countries are expected at the venue.
